Utility Expansion

Description

IPS led the design and commissioning of the new utility cooling plant and energy management system at the client’s Redwood City campus. The new cooling plant provides 150 tons of cooling to serve air handling systems for histology and accessioning labs. The chillers are high efficiency air-cooled equipped with state-of-the-art digital scroll compressors that allow for part-load operations down to 10% for highest energy savings.

IPS provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering for the new plant. The chilled water design incorporates a 500-gallon storage tank to buffer the load and save additional energy. The HVAC system provided a stand-by air handling unit for full backup of the histology lab and accessioning lab.

The electrical design includes a new 200kW emergency generator to support the new utility cooling plant and air handling systems. The electrical system includes triple switch and automatic transfer switch to allow for redundancy in the primary generators.

The new utility plant and electrical improvements provide the building critical laboratories fully backed-up for cooling and airflow to ensure necessary operations may continue to meet the client’s business demands.
